WHAT IS PERCUSSION?
Percussion is the drums, tambourine , triangle, xylophone. It is everything that you hit to make the sound. If you choose percussion as your number one choice- you get to play lots of instruments.
WHERE DOES IT FIT IN THE BAND?
The percussion instruments are up at the back of the band, and a percussionist learns how to play them all! There are tuned and untuned percussion instruments which means that some of the instruments have different notes so they can play different melodies (tunes), and others like the bass drum just make the one special sound.
HOW DO I KNOW IF IT'S FOR ME?
You like the idea of getting to play lots of different instruments and being a part of a team that swaps around between instruments all the time. There is lots of sharing, but everyone is always doing something! You need to be reliable and able to maintain a steady beat. The conductor will depend on you to be focused and watch while you play, and you need to be switched on so you can swap between different instruments at the right time. Most of all you have to be up for a challenge- and a lot of fun.
Percussion really is great fun, everyone wants to be in the percussion section in band, which is why we give every player on every instrument a 6 months experience in the percussion ensemble before the concert band starts in term 3 with all of the different instruments combined.
CAN I TRY IT ON FOR SIZE?
Absolutely!
Book into an Instrument Demo session to try percussion with the guidance of an Upscale Music Teacher. Its more than just hitting a drum!
Make sure you list 2 other instrument preferences to try at the instrument demo as well as percussion.
